Proposal for a Radical Revision of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Psychotherapy: Lessons from Half Century of Consciousness Research (Tel Aviv, March 1, 2015)
- Drawing on observations from more than fifty years of research into an important subgroup of non-ordinary states of consciousness that he calls “holotropic,” the presenter suggests a radical revision of some basic assumptions of modern psychiatry, psychology, and psychotherapy. These observations come from a wide range of disciplines – psychedelic research, powerful forms of experiential psychotherapy, work with spontaneous episodes of non-ordinary states of consciousness (“spiritual emergencies”),.thanatology, parapsychology, field anthropology, and quantum-relativistic physics. The proposed changes involve the nature of consciousness and its relationship to matter, dimensions of the human psyche, the roots of emotional and psychosomatic disorders, and therapeutic strategy. These changes resemble in their nature and scope the conceptual cataclysm that appeared in physics in the first three decades of the twentieth century in the understanding of the material world and - in a certain sense - are even complementary to the new physics. We will explore these observations and their implications for Western science. In the light of the new findings, spirituality appears to be an essential attribute of the human psyche and of the universal scheme of things.
Inner Journey: Realms of the Human Psyche Revealed by Modern Consciousness Research (Tel Aviv, March 2, 2015)
- Western psychiatry and psychology is using a model of the psyche limited to postnatal biography and the Freudian individual unconscious. The findings of modern consciousness research indicate an urgent need for a vast expansion of the cartography of the psyche by adding two important domains: perinatal (related to memories of biologic birth and prenatal existence) and transpersonal (historical and archetypal realms of the collective unconscious, karmic and phylogenetic matrices, sources for cosmic consciousness, etc). In this richly slide-illustrated seminar, we will explore these deep recesses of the psyche using the art of individuals who have experienced psychedelic and Holotropic Breathwork sessions. We will discuss the implications of these discoveries for therapy of emotional disorders and for the understanding of ritual and spiritual life of humanity.
The Adventure of Self-Discovery: A Holotropic Breathwork Experience (Tel Aviv, March 3-4, 2015)
To complete registration for the 2-day Holotropic Breathwork workshop, you must provide a brief medical history by completing this form. This link will also be provided in your registration confirmation email.
- Holotropic Breathwork™ is a powerful approach to self-exploration and healing that integrates insights from modern consciousness research, anthropology, various depth psychologies, transpersonal psychology, Eastern spiritual practices, and mystical traditions of the world. The name Holotropic means literally "moving toward wholeness" (from the Greek "holos"=whole and "trepein"=moving in the direction of something). The process itself uses very simple means: it combines accelerated breathing with evocative music in a special set and setting. With the eyes closed and lying on a mat, each person uses their own breath and the music in the room to enter a non-ordinary state of consciousness. This state activates the natural inner healing process of the individual's psyche, bringing him or her a particular set of internal experiences. With the inner healing intelligence guiding the process, the quality and content brought forth is unique to each person and for that particular time and place. While recurring themes are common, no two sessions are ever alike. Additional elements of the process include focused energy release work and mandala drawing. Holotropic Breathwork™ is usually done in groups, although individual sessions are also possible. Within the groups, people work in pairs and alternate in the roles of experiencer and "sitter". The sitter's role is simply to be available to assist the breather, not to interfere or interrupt the process. The same is true for trained facilitators, who are available as helpers if necessary.
Healing our Deepest Wounds: Insights from the Research of Non-Ordinary States of Consciousness (Jerusalem, March 8, 2015)
- Modern consciousness research has brought revolutionary insights into the dimensions of the human psyche and the nature of consciousness. The new vastly expanded cartography of the unconscious that has emerged from this research is not just a matter of academic interest. It has profound implications for the understanding and treatment of emotional, psychosomatic, and interpersonal disorders that are “psychogenic” in nature (have no organic cause). This research has shown that the origin of these conditions is not in infancy and childhood as commonly assumed in academic and clinical circles, but that they have additional deeper roots in the trauma of biological birth and in the transpersonal domains of the psyche (historical and archetypal realms of the collective unconscious, and ancestral, karmic, and phylogenetic matrices). For this reason, effective therapy has to use means that can reach these levels of the psyche.
The Roots of Human Violence and Greed: Transpersonal Perspectives on the Current Global Crisis (Jerusalem, March 9, 2015)
- Since time immemorial, violence and greed have been among the most important forces driving human history. Due to the technological progress and exponential population growth in the twentieth century, they have become a threat for survival of life on our planet. It has become imperative to gain a deeper understanding of the roots of these forces in the human psyche and to find ways of reducing their impact in the world. In this slide-illustrated seminar, we will explore the observations from psychedelic research, holotropic breathwork, and transpersonal psychology that offer new insights into insatiable greed and extreme forms of human violence and social pathology, such as wars, bloody revolutions, terrorism, suicide bombing, concentration camps, and genocide. We will also discuss the potential of holotropic states of consciousness to explore and transform these dangerous forces in the human psyche that threaten planetary survival. In a series of slides, we will demonstrate the astonishing similarities between the symbolism of posters and cartoons from the time of wars and the visions accompanying the reliving of birth and the experience of psychospiritual death and rebirth.
Psychospiritual Death and Rebirth: Observations from Modern Consciousness Research (Tsfat, March 11, 2015)
-
This slide-illustrated seminar will explore the new extended cartography of the psyche that has emerged from research of non-ordinary states of consciousness, with special focus on the process of psychospiritual death and rebirth and its relationship to the reliving of biological birth. We will show the important role that this process has played in the ritual and spiritual life of humanity – in the initiatory crisis of shamans and in their healing work, in the rites of passage of aboriginal cultures, in the ancient mysteries of death and rebirth, and in the experiential practice of the great religions of the world. We will discuss the therapeutic, transformative, and evolutionary potential of this process for individuals and the new perspectives that it offers for understanding and alleviating the global crisis we are currently facing. This will be Stan's most mystical talk in this series, and we are excited to be able to offer the lecture in Tsfat. As Israel's center of the Kabbalistic tradition, it is a particularly fitting conclusion for our journey, and we look forward to seeing you there!
